Tinubu Orders MDAs to Exclusively Purchase CNG-Powered Vehicles

President Bola Tinubu has instructed all government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to purchase only vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).

This directive was communicated through a statement from the President’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday.

The statement outlines that this decision is a crucial component of the administration’s larger plan to secure energy, improve efficiency, and cut down on fuel expenses. It signifies a notable move towards adopting cleaner energy alternatives.

Ngelale stated that CNG vehicles, recognized for emitting fewer pollutants, offer a budget-friendly option for energy users in Nigeria. He noted that the initiative is in line with Nigeria’s aim to shift towards more environmentally friendly energy choices.

“This nation will not progress forward if we continue to dance on the same spot. We have the will to drive the implementation of CNG adoption across the country, and we must set the example as public officials in leading the way to that prosperous future that we are working to achieve for our people.

“It starts with us, and in seeing that we are serious, Nigerians will follow our lead,” Ajuri quoted the president as saying.

Additionally, the President directed that any suggestions to buy old-style petrol cars should be turned down. Instead, he encouraged council members to concentrate on getting vehicles that run on CNG. This move is to show the government’s commitment to these changes.

The spokesperson explained that President Tinubu wants to make use of Nigeria’s big gas reserves, cut down the heavy expenses people face for transportation, and make life better for everyone in the country.

After the fuel subsidy was scrapped on May 29, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took action by launching the Presidential CNG Initiative in October of the same year. This move aimed to offer cheaper, safer, and greener energy solutions.

The initiative mainly focuses on providing compressed natural gas for public transportation. To ease the strain of increasing fuel costs on citizens, the Federal Government set aside N100 billion from the N500 billion palliative budget. This money went towards purchasing 5,500 CNG vehicles (including buses and tricycles), 100 electric buses, and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits.

Additionally, this funding supports the establishment of CNG refilling stations and electric charging points. The private sector also chipped in, investing over $50 million in real money towards refueling stations, conversion centers, and main stations.
