Solarcentury Africa Secures $20M for Namibia’s First Merchant Solar IPP

Solarcentury Africa Limited, in partnership with local co-developer Sino Energy (Pty) Ltd, has reached financial close on a 20-MWp solar project in Namibia. This project, valued at $20 million, will be the first fully merchant independent power producer (IPP) in the country, trading its entire energy output directly into the regional grid.

Located in Otjiwarongo and Outjo in the Otjozondjupa region, the solar facility will produce 51 GWh of clean electricity annually and connect to the NamPower Gerus substation along the North-South transmission line. Its output will primarily be sold on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), with the added flexibility to supply power within Namibia to contestable customers under the new Modified Single Buyer (MSB) rules.

Expected to be operational by Q3 2025, the project will have Solarcentury Africa’s trading arm, Solarcentury Trading, manage the energy sales as a member of SAPP.

Entirely funded by Solarcentury Africa, with support from parent company BB Energy, this development represents one of the largest UK investments in Namibia to date. Alensy Energy Solutions Pty Limited, a local contractor, has been awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.
