NNPC Confirms Full Operation of Maiduguri Emergency Power Project by 2025
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the full operation of the 52-megawatt Maiduguri Emergency Power Project (MEPP) by 2025.
This assurance was given during an inspection visit by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperipe Ekpo, on Saturday, 14 December 2024. He was joined by Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, and Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President for Gas, Power & New Energy.
In a statement shared on its official X account (formerly Twitter), NNPC revealed that the 32MW Simple Cycle phase of the project is already completed and operational. The remaining 18MW Combined Cycle phase is scheduled to commence operations by 2025.
The MEPP, a 52MW Integrated Power Project, was officially commissioned on 2 March 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. The initiative aims to deliver stable and sustainable electricity to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, and its surrounding areas.
According to NNPC, the project was launched to address prolonged power outages in the region caused by nine years of vandalism and insurgent attacks on power infrastructure.
“These outages have severely impacted economic activities in the area,” the NNPC stated, highlighting the urgent need for a reliable power supply to restore growth and stability in the region.
