Nigerians Face Another Blackout as National Grid Collapses Again Within 24 Hours

Nigerians were once again left without electricity after the national grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after a previous failure on Monday evening.

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), the grid recorded an unprecedented drop to zero Megawatts (MW) by 9:30 am on Tuesday, despite showing an improvement to over 100 MW overnight.

Several electricity distribution companies confirmed the incident via their social media accounts on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Ikeja Electric posted: “Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced another system outage today, 15/10/24, at 09:17hrs, affecting supply within our network.”

The company added that efforts to restore power were ongoing in collaboration with key stakeholders. “Kindly bear with us,” it said.

Eko DisCo also issued a statement: “Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17hrs, resulting in a loss of power supply across our network.

“We are currently working with our partners for a speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you informed as soon as power supply is restored.”

Data reviewed revealed that all 22 generation companies (GenCos) were down at the time of this report. This latest collapse marks the seventh grid failure in 2024, further compounding the longstanding issues in Nigeria’s power sector.
