Kaduna Electric To Refund Overbilled Unmetered Customers
Kaduna Electric has announced its intention to comply with the directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), requiring the refund of overbilled customers.
This decision comes following NERC’s enforcement action against distribution companies, including Kaduna Electric, for failing to adhere to the commission’s Capping Order aimed at preventing excessive billing for unmetered customers.
According to NERC, the capping policy aims to ensure that estimated bills for unmetered customers align with the measured consumption of metered customers on the same supply feeder, promoting fairness and transparency in billing practices.
In a statement issued by Abdulazeez Abdullahi, the Head of Corporate Communication at Kaduna Electric, the company affirmed its readiness to implement the refund process mandated by the regulator.
However, it emphasised that customers eligible for refunds must first settle any outstanding debts to avoid disconnection.
Abdullahi highlighted the challenges faced by Kaduna Electric, citing a significant debt burden that undermines the company’s ability to provide efficient service to its customers.
He urged customers to fulfill their financial obligations promptly, emphasising the company’s zero-tolerance policy towards electricity debt accumulation.
Operating across Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States, Kaduna Electric acknowledges the evolving landscape of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. The company recognises the importance of full remittance to the market for energy received and distributed, a requirement essential for sustaining operations and improving service delivery.
However, Kaduna Electric emphasises that achieving this objective hinges on customers’ willingness to settle their bills in a timely and complete manner.
Addressing the issue of sectoral challenges, including liquidity constraints, the company emphasise the critical role of prompt payment for consumed energy in overcoming these obstacles and ensuring a reliable electricity supply.
As Kaduna Electric moves forward with the refund process and endeavours to enhance its operational efficiency, it calls upon customers to collaborate in maintaining a sustainable electricity ecosystem.
