FG to Distribute 2,000 CNG Tricycles to Youths Nationwide from October 1

The Federal Government, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), is set to begin distributing 2,000 tricycles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) to young people in the transport sector across Nigeria from October 1st, 2024.

The initiative aims to provide these CNG-powered tricycles to young individuals working in the transport industry nationwide, as part of efforts to tackle increasing transport costs and encourage more environmentally friendly and affordable mobility options.

In a statement posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday, PCNGi noted that the programme is a key component of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to improve the transport sector by promoting cleaner and more cost-effective alternatives.

The official statement also confirmed that the distribution will begin in Abuja at 1:00 PM on October 1st, at the Old Parade Ground in Area 11, Garki.

“The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) is distributing 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles to informal youth in the transportation sector, as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s @officialABAT administration’s efforts to reduce transportation costs for Nigerians,” the post read.

In an earlier released statement on behalf of Michael Oluwagbemi, the PCNGi Program Director/Chief Executive, the distribution of 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles is described as a collaborative effort between PCNGi and the Ministry of Youths, aimed at providing young Nigerians with a source of livelihood while advancing environmental and economic objectives.

On Friday, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) launched its Transport Fare Drop Programme in Abuja, aimed at promoting CNG as a cleaner and more affordable fuel alternative, while reducing the cost of transport.

This initiative included the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between PCNGi and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), to convert vehicles operating on the Abuja-Itakpe Station to Adavi route to CNG, to reduce fares by 30-40%.

In addition, the statement revealed that on Monday, 30th September, PCNGi will sign an agreement with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) to implement the Nigerian Police CNG Conversion Programme, which will involve training police cadets to manage specialised CNG conversion centres established by the NPTF.

On Wednesday, 2nd October, PCNGi will launch the Kogi State Conversion Incentive Programme, delivering CNG buses to the state’s mass transit service for routes to Abuja, as well as inaugurating three new CNG conversion centres in Kogi.

The programme will also be extended to Ekiti State next week, where CNG buses will be handed over to the state’s mass transit system, alongside the opening of four additional CNG conversion centres.
