In any given society, access to quality healthcare services undoubtedly contributes to good health and prevents life-threatening diseases. A healthy community is a strong foundation for a thriving economy, as the productivity of individuals with good health positively contributes to growth and development.
Nigeria’s largest power generation company, Egbin Power, has consistently provided multi-faceted health interventions for residents in its host communities – Egbin, Ijede and Ipakan – in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.
One of these interventions is the recent provision of a fully equipped 5-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the General Hospital Ijede, Ikorodu, to enable the hospital attend to critical patient care and bolster emergency response capabilities in Lagos State.
Medical equipment such as dialysis machines, medical monitors, air compressors, oxygen tanks, ICU ventilators, pulse-oximeters, infrared thermometers, and other medical consumables were donated to the facility.
At the commissioning ceremony, Egbin Power and Sahara Group Foundation emphasized that the initiative underscores their commitment to promoting access to quality critical healthcare services.
Mokhtar Bounour, the CEO of Egbin Power, said: “At Egbin Power, we believe that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right. Our commitment to promoting health and overall development is unwavering. By investing in initiatives that support health and education, we aim to foster thriving and resilient communities.”
The hospital management commended the collaboration of Sahara Group Foundation and Egbin Power Plc, which gave birth to the donation of the ICU, noting that the facility would serve people in the Ikorodu community and Lagos State at large.
The GenCo’s annual medical outreach is another intervention that has made a profound impact on the communities. This particular initiative caters to everyone in the host communities, including the aged, youth, and nursing mothers, allowing them to get examined by qualified medical practitioners working in collaboration with Egbin Power. Thousands of residents who attend the medical outreach annually go through cardiovascular, arthritis, dental, and diabetes among other health screenings. The beneficiaries of the medical outreach are further provided free quality medications after careful examinations by qualified medical experts.
The 2024 medical outreach programme was conducted in collaboration with Livewell Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation, offering a range of free medical services including cardiovascular, arthritis, dental, eye-check, diabetes tests, malaria treatment, hepatitis screening, and blood pressure examination.
Over the years, this platform has promoted good health among the residents, enabling them to promptly address their health challenges and stem life-threatening diseases.
Committed to further ensure that its health interventions penetrate the interior areas of the host communities while understanding the pivotal role played by primary healthcare facilities in delivering accessible services, Egbin Power also supports the Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) within its operating environment. The company recently donated essential medical items such as oxygen tanks, PPE, bedsheets, pillowcases, fire extinguishers, infrared thermometers, blankets, and other consumables to the Primary Healthcare Centers at Ijede and Oke-Eletu in Ikorodu, Lagos.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the majority of essential interventions for universal health coverage can be delivered using a PHC approach. An estimated 75% of the projected health gains from the Sustainable Development Goals could be achieved through PHC.
The WHO agrees that PHC is the most inclusive, equitable, cost-effective, and efficient approach to enhancing people’s physical and mental health, as well as social well-being. Evidence of the wide-ranging impact of investment in PHC continues to grow around the world, particularly during crises such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
Egbin Power acknowledges that PHCs are the first point of contact for people, particularly children, women, and the elderly, as these facilities provide critical services that prevent illnesses and enhance the quality of life.
Egbin Power emphasized, “We believe that corporate responsibility goes beyond providing energy to power homes and businesses. It is about lighting up lives and contributing to the well-being of the communities we serve. Our commitment to social responsibility is deeply rooted in our core values, and today’s event is a testament to that commitment. This donation is part of our broader commitment to health and well-being. We understand that a healthy community is a thriving community. Therefore, we will continue to invest in initiatives that promote health, education, and overall development.”
In addition to this, Egbin Power has been supplying free uninterrupted electricity to General Hospital Ijede for more than 10 years, reducing the hospital’s need to run on diesel in order to have electricity. This has taken off a huge cost from the hospital’s expenses and ensured a steady supply that enables the efficiency of operation.
Furthermore, Egbin Power supports healthcare in Lagos State by supplying free hospital-grade oxygen to several hospitals within Ikorodu. Additionally, the company donates quality medications to General Hospital quarterly, administered free of charge to patients. These interventions have not only saved lives but have also improved the health and well-being of the residents.
Through its consistent efforts and tireless dedication to healthcare, Egbin Power has set a model for corporate social responsibility, demonstrating the true meaning of social responsibility and setting a standard for other organizations to follow.
