Abuja Faces Power Outages for 15 Days Amid TCN Upgrade
Residents of Abuja will experience daily power outages lasting seven hours from January 6 to January 20, 2025. This disruption is due to the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) relocation of power transmission towers along the Outer Southern Expressway.
The planned outages are part of efforts to support the Federal Capital Development Agency’s (FCDA) road dualisation project in the Apo area, according to a statement by Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs.
The project involves the relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV transmission towers on the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line situated along the expressway. The relocation process includes dismantling existing towers, constructing new ones, and restringing power cables to restore supply to the Apo Transmission Substation via the Gwagwalada Substation.
“This relocation is essential to enable the expansion and modernisation of the Outer Southern Expressway, which will significantly enhance transportation and urban development in Abuja,” the statement read.
Areas affected by the outages include Kubwa, Karu, Maraba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and Apo Mechanic Village. Other impacted locations are Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and Alaita. Customers under the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in these areas will face electricity rationing for 15 days.
TCN acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the power disruptions and expressed regret for the temporary impact on residents and businesses.
“While the relocation of transmission towers is necessary for the road project, we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and assure residents that power supply will be restored as soon as the work is completed,” the statement added.
This announcement follows recent essential maintenance at two major transmission substations in Abuja. On December 28, engineers worked on a 60MVA transformer and related switchgear at the Gwagwalada 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation.
The maintenance, conducted between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., aimed to improve the reliability of Abuja’s power infrastructure.
